What better way to kick it off than by talking to our own CEO Mick Clayton about what he enjoys away from work.

Where Do You Work?

Tell Us About One Thing You Do Away From Work
I’m part of the newly formed committee responsible for the overseeing of Fit Red Veterans FC in Barnsley
How Did You Get Into That?
I’ve always been ‘into’ football but changes have to be made as we ‘mature’ and I got to the point where, even though I was still very active with football, I felt overweight and not as fit as I should be. The Fit Reds programme has been running for over 3 years in Barnsley and started as a joint initiative between the British Heart Foundation and Barnsley Football Club aimed at men over 35 in the Barnsley region. The programme has been more than successful in improving health, fitness and diet as more than 300 men underwent classroom sessions to raise awareness of health and diet issues affecting men, followed by circuit training and then football. Sessions have been run all over the borough with what must be in excess of 300 men attending the course.
How Long Have You Been Doing It?
I’ve been a Fit Red since January 2014 so, taking the 9 week programme out of that, then I’ve been a Veteran since April 2014.
What Do You Enjoy So Much About It?
Originally getting healthier and fitter; then it becomes about seeing others get the same benefits. Football is a great social activity and the Fit Reds programme has brought together many, many individuals – especially at Oakwell on a Thursday night where there can be anywhere up to 100 blokes playing five-a-side and undertaking circuit training under the Fit Reds banner. The Health project has now gained additional funding and will be run by PSS (Person Shaped Support) in 2016-17, with the Veterans side of things now being run by committee.
Tell Us What Your Highlight Has Been Since You Started
Getting fitter, joining the committee and just playing football.
As we’re not in a league of any sorts (it’d be difficult putting together a regular squad of just 15/16 from a huge pool of Fit Red veterans!), we play friendly games against others around the country and my personal highlights have been threading the through ball to put us One-nil up against Liverpool at their Melwood training ground and scoring against Scunthorpe.
