This qualification is aimed at those who are involved in setting out and erecting complex masonry structures in the
workplace working from drawings and specifications. The structures could be brick and blockwork or local materials.
It is not expected that candidates working in this industry all do the same activities however candidates will need to
prove competence in a minimum of 3 of the following: arches ,chimney stacks or fi replaces, walls with flush, projecting
or decorative features, walls curved on plan, walls splayed on plan. Those taking the qualification must also prove
knowledge and competence in working at heights, calculating quantities and wastage, use of powered and hand tools
and equipment. All work completed must be done in accordance with Building Regulations and Industry recognised safe
working practices, including the disposal of waste.
The qualification is structured to ensure that there is a high degree of flexibility within the units available and will allow
employees from companies of all sizes and specialisms equal opportunity to complete. To provide this opportunity in
addition to the core skills above, candidates will also be able to select optional units recognising skills including, working
with non-specialist concrete, masonry cladding, plastering or rendering finishes, slate and tile roofing, installing drainage
and the repair and maintenance of masonry structures.
The standards cover the most important aspects of the job. This qualification is at Level 3, although some units may be at
different levels. Level 3 qualifications are primarily aimed at those who are fully trained and experienced in a wide range
of roles that may involve decision making, quality checks, work planning and supporting others
There is also a Level 2 qualification in Trowel Occupations through GQA that requires candidates to carry out work on
noncomplex structures
